Checking In: Michelberger Hotel, Berlin
Michelberger is a hotel that’s been on my list to check out for years. I’ve always thought of it as one of the ‘original’ lifestyle hotels, with a strong brand and cool buzz around it, so was stoked to finally check it out when we were in Berlin for the marathon recently. Located in Friedrichshain, one of Berlin’s most bohemian neighbourhoods, in a former factory, MICHELBERGER HOTEL puts you right where you want to be. Staying here, you’re in easy walking distance of the cool Kreuzburg neighbourhood, a stone’s throw from some of the cities best markets and eateries, and surrounded by the energy of Berlin's famous nightlife — should you want to try to get into Berghain, it’s just a 15-min walk away!
Rooms are Michelberger are small and functional. They’re cleverly designed to make good use of the space, but are fuss-free and basic. Don’t go expecting luxury, they’re crash pads for sure! We stayed in a Cosy, the smallest category I think, which was pretty tight, but the bed was comfy, the shower was good, and Dr Bronner’s environmentally responsible toiletries are always appreciated!
The lobby is a bit of a hangout spot with slouchy sofas, cosy corners, designer lighting, and lots of plants. The whole place hums with a cool, creative buzz, but not in a way that feels wanky nor unwelcoming. Locals and guests tap away on laptops, chat, drink coffee or Negronis depending on the time of day. Michelberger’s destination restaurant serves modern, organic food with a focus on seasonal produce, and a more casual cafe serves coffee and cocktails round the clock. We visited in a very rainy October but the hotel’s courtyard looks like the perfect summer spot for lazy afternoons.
What I really love about Michelberger is its strong personality and super fun side projects. They’ve pushed the brand into other sectors, launching Michelberger Booze to supply its bars, and Fountain of Youth coconut water which not only looks great but tastes amazing and has no doubt cured many a Berghain hangover over the years.
For somewhere cool to just crash, Michelberger is the one.
