Sleep Here: Another Place, Lake District

Another Place, on the banks of Ullswater is a great base for exploring the Lake District. Whether your itinerary includes 20-mile hikes or just a short stroll to the tea shop, you’ll be happy here. Rooms are large and comfortable, you can walk and swim from the doorstep, and should the weather be off, there’s a gorgeous pool and spa you could easily spend a whole day in.

40 rooms vary in size and style, the nicest of those being in the contemporary wing. Ours had a Juliette balcony overlooking the lake, a giant bed, and the biggest of bathtubs. Extra brownie points for complimentary Tunnock’s Tea Cakes too.  Downstairs, a library-come-lounge is the perfect rainy-day spot. There are two restaurants: Living Space serve family-friendly comfort food, whilst Rampsbeck offers a more gourmet experience. Breakfast is included in rates and will keep well-fuelled for a long day of walking.

The pool here is the real showpiece. An all-glass surround offers incredible views of the mountains and makes you really feel in amongst nature — especially when you get in the outdoor hot tub and soak up that fresh, fresh air. If pampering is on your agenda, there’s also a spa, where you can book everything from massages to manicures.

Another Place does a good job of embracing its lakeside location and does all it can to lure you in. Wetsuits are available to borrow for free, kayaks and stand-up paddle-boards are available to hire, and there are sessions that run daily for group swimming or technique improvement. There’s plenty more to explore nearby and the chalkboard in the lobby will easily guide you to some great local walking routes. Aira Force is a good starting point: a National Trust-ran waterfall walk just a 5-minute drive away.

As idyllic as Another Place is for couples, there is a definite family focus (including an on-site nursery), so if you’re looking for a romantic weekend away, avoid kid’s holidays as it will be busy and loud.
